It keeps everything in Windows 11 Pro (BitLocker, Hyper-V, Remote Desktop, Group Policy) and lifts the hardware limits that held back compute and content-creation machines. Four differences really matter.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Up to 4 physical processors and 6 TB of RAM<\/strong>, compared with 2 processors and 2 TB on Windows Pro: four-socket workstations can finally use all of their hardware.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ReFS (Resilient File System)<\/strong>: Pro for Workstations and Enterprise can format data drives in ReFS, whereas Windows 11 Pro limits ReFS to Dev Drive. Combined with mirrored Storage Spaces, it detects and repairs silent data corruption on footage libraries or datasets of tens of terabytes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>NVDIMM-N persistent memory<\/strong>: non-volatile memory modules seen as storage at DRAM speed, whose content survives a power cut. Useful as a working cache for video editing or simulation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>SMB Direct (RDMA)<\/strong>: transfers to a compatible NAS or storage array run without loading the processor, with very low latency on RoCE, iWARP or InfiniBand network cards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On top of that, the <strong>Ultimate Performance<\/strong> power plan is available out of the box: it removes the micro-latencies caused by component power saving during a long render or calculation.<\/p>\n<h2>Which edition should you choose? All these licenses are genuine Microsoft licenses from the second-hand market, resold lawfully in the European Union under the UsedSoft ruling of the Court of Justice (case C-128\/11).<\/p>\n<h2>Does your workstation really need it?<\/h2>\n<p>To be frank, most PCs gain nothing from this edition. If your machine has a single processor, less than 2 TB of RAM, standard NTFS storage and an ordinary Gigabit network, <a href=\"\/product\/windows-11-pro\/\">Windows 11 Pro<\/a> offers exactly the same software features for less. Application performance does not change from one edition to the other: what differs is the hardware Windows can use.<\/p>\n<p>Pro for Workstations becomes relevant in four specific cases:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>your motherboard takes three or four physical processors;<\/li>\n<li>you go beyond 2 TB of installed RAM;<\/li>\n<li>you handle data where integrity comes first: photo and video archives, simulation results, render repositories;<\/li>\n<li>your network or storage already uses RDMA or persistent memory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you also need Credential Guard and application control for a managed fleet, look at our <a href=\"\/windows-11-enterprise-key\/\">Windows 11 Enterprise key<\/a> page: Enterprise can format ReFS data drives too.<\/p>\n<h2>Compatibility, installation and edition change<\/h2>\n<p>There is no dedicated installation image: the standard Windows 11 media already contains Pro for Workstations, and the key you enter decides which edition is installed. On a PC already running Windows 11 Pro, the upgrade happens without reinstalling, through Settings &gt; System &gt; Activation &gt; Change product key. One restart is enough: files, software and settings stay in place. Our <a href=\"\/notice\/install-windows-11\/\">Windows 11 installation guide<\/a> covers every step.<\/p>\n<p>On the hardware side, Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and a processor on the list of supported models. Many dual-Xeon workstations from the E5 v3 and v4 generations are not on that list. Windows 10 Pro for Workstations installs on them, but outside the paid ESU program for organizations, Windows 10 no longer receives security updates: our page on <a href=\"\/windows-10-end-of-support\/\">Windows 10 end of support<\/a> explains the options.
