All three editions share the same core and the same roles: Active Directory, DNS and DHCP, file server, IIS, Hyper-V and Windows Admin Center. What sets them apart are the virtualization rights, the advanced storage features and the licensing model. For a team of around twenty people with a single server, Essentials can be enough; as soon as you consolidate several virtual machines, Standard becomes the reference; Datacenter only makes sense for a high density of virtual machines or a hyperconverged cluster.

Edition

Designed for

Virtualization included

CALs required

Essentials

Very small businesses: 1 server, 25 users and 50 devices at most

1 virtual machine or 1 physical installation

No, limits built in

Standard

Small and mid-sized businesses: Active Directory, files, backup, RDS

2 Windows Server virtual machines plus the Hyper-V host

Yes, per user or per device

Datacenter

Dense virtualization, clusters, Storage Spaces Direct

Unlimited virtual machines and Hyper-V containers

Yes, per user or per device

Datacenter: Azure Edition

Azure and Azure Local (formerly Azure Stack HCI) only

Unlimited, with hotpatching

Yes

The Windows Server 2022 license sold in our shop costs {prix:microsoft-windows-server-2022} and is delivered as a product key by email, with the installation instructions. If your project calls for a specific edition (a cluster, a dense virtualization host), email our support team before ordering and we will tell you whether our license fits. You can also browse the Windows Server category.

Core-based licensing: the counting rules to know

Since the 2016 version, Microsoft licenses the Standard and Datacenter editions per physical core rather than per processor. Three rules avoid the usual mistakes:

every physical core in the server must be covered;

a minimum of 8 cores per processor and 16 cores per server applies, even on a small 4-core tower;

Microsoft sells core licenses in packs of 2 and 16 cores, combined up to the exact total.

A concrete example: a dual-processor server with 12 cores each needs 24 core licenses. The Essentials edition escapes this calculation, since it is licensed per server, within a limit of one processor and 10 cores.

Good to know: before ordering, check the number of physical cores in your server with the PowerShell command
Get-CimInstance Win32_Processor
. If your hardware goes beyond a typical small-business server (several processors, a high core count), email our support team first so we can confirm the right purchase.

CALs: who needs them and which type to choose

Standard and Datacenter require a CAL (Client Access License) for each user or device connecting to the server, on top of the server license itself. CALs must match the server version or a newer one: CALs from an earlier version are not valid for Windows Server 2022.

User CAL: suits mobile employees who use several devices (office PC, laptop, tablet).

Device CAL: suits workstations shared between several people, for example in shifts.

RDS CAL: needed in addition for remote desktop sessions, as explained in our Windows Server RDS guide.

Essentials requires none: its limits of 25 users and 50 devices are built into the product. CALs are separate from the server key and are not included with it.

Hyper-V virtualization: what the Standard edition really allows

A Standard license covering all cores grants the right to run two Windows Server virtual machines, plus the physical host as long as it only runs the Hyper-V role. Need four virtual machines? You stack a second full license on the same machine, in steps of two. Beyond six to eight virtual machines, Datacenter becomes the more economical choice and unlocks Storage Spaces Direct, software-defined networking and shielded virtual machines, which Standard lacks.

Windows Server 2022 also brings AES-256 encryption for SMB and cluster traffic, TLS 1.3 enabled by default, nested virtualization on AMD processors and noticeably lighter Server Core container images.

Hardware, workstations and support timeline

Plan for a 64-bit 1.4 GHz processor with NX and DEP support, 2 GB of RAM with Desktop Experience (512 MB for Server Core) and 32 GB of disk at the bare minimum; in real life, aim considerably higher. Secured-core features require UEFI, Secure Boot, TPM 2.0 and hardware virtualization enabled.

On the client side, PCs running Windows 11 Pro ({prix:windows-11-pro}) join the domain without any special handling; the Home editions cannot. Windows 10 Pro ({prix:windows-10-pro}) remains an option for PCs that cannot run Windows 11, keeping in mind that Microsoft ended its standard support in October 2025. For a heavy-duty machine (CAD, rendering, large data sets), Windows 11 Pro for Workstations at {prix:windows-11-pro-for-workstations} supports server-grade hardware.

Finally, the calendar: Windows Server 2022 mainstream support ended on 13 October 2026, but security updates continue until 14 October 2031, which leaves five more years of security fixes. Our keys come from genuine licenses resold within the European Union, a model confirmed by the Court of Justice of the EU in the UsedSoft ruling (case C-128/11).

Ordering your Windows Server 2022 license

Add the license to your cart and pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Bancontact.

Receive the product key by email within minutes, with the installation instructions.

Install Windows Server 2022 from Microsoft’s official image, choosing the edition that matches your key.

Enter the key during setup or afterwards: activation takes place on Microsoft’s official servers.

You receive an invoice with VAT, and your purchase comes with lifetime replacement of a defective key.
