What did Windows 8.1 fix?
The Start button came back, the PC could boot straight to the desktop, and several apps could share the screen side by side more flexibly. These were the three main complaints about Windows 8. Windows 8.1 also added deeper OneDrive integration and better support for high-resolution displays.
What are the Embedded 8.1 Industry editions?
Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro and Enterprise run cash registers, kiosks and industrial equipment. They add a write filter that discards changes at restart, which is valuable on a public terminal, plus shell and keyboard lockdown. Choose them only for dedicated devices; a regular PC needs Pro or Core.
Will Windows 8.1 run on my old PC?
Very likely: it needs 1 GB of memory in 32-bit or 2 GB in 64-bit, and 16 to 20 GB of disk space. Microsoft ended support in January 2023, so use it offline, for a test bench or in a virtual machine. For daily internet use, choose a system that still receives security updates, such as Windows 11 or, on older hardware, Windows 10 LTSC.
