Error 0x4004F00C: Fix Office Activation Grace Period
Code 0x4004F00C means your Office suite is running inside a grace period: it installed, it opens, it lets you type — but it was never activated against Microsoft’s servers. This isn’t a breakdown, it’s a countdown. When the timer runs out, Word and Excel drop into read-only mode. The usual cause is an activation that was never finished: a key that never validated, or a volume-licensed install that no longer reaches its company activation server. Here is how to read the real licence state, then push the activation through.
What does error 0x4004F00C mean?
The code comes from the Windows licensing service, and its official description fits in a single line: the application is running within a valid grace period. Put plainly, Office installed correctly and recognised a product, but activation never completed. You will usually meet it in the ospp.vbs diagnostic, on the LICENSE STATUS line, or in the activation window that keeps reappearing every time you open Word.
The situations that lead to this code are well documented:
- activation was never finished: the key was never entered, or the validation failed silently in the background;
- a volume-licensed (KMS) install: a resold corporate PC, or a laptop taken off the company network, can no longer reach its activation server, so a licence that was meant to renew itself quietly falls back into grace;
- a key applied to the wrong edition: a Professional Plus key refused by a Home & Student installation, or a volume key dropped onto a retail build;
- something blocking the network: a proxy, a firewall rule, an over-eager antivirus, or simply the wrong system date and time;
- a trial version that has run its course, or an unofficial activator that has stopped renewing its fake activation.
The fixes, from the simplest to the most drastic
1. Read the real licence state with ospp.vbs
This step tells you exactly what Office thinks of its own licence, which beats guessing. Open Command Prompt as administrator, then move into the Office folder:
- 64-bit Office: cd /d “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16”
- 32-bit Office on 64-bit Windows: cd /d “C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16”
Don’t let the folder name throw you: Office 2016, 2019, 2021 and 2024 all live in Office16. Now run cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus. Three lines matter:

One useful caveat: ospp.vbs ships with the perpetual editions. On a Microsoft 365 subscription, activation hangs off the linked Microsoft account instead, and this script will have very little to say.
2. Finish the activation from inside Office
Open Word, then head to File > Account. If an “Activate Product” button is showing, click it and let the wizard run all the way to the end. For a licence bought online, pick Change Product Key and type in the 25 characters. While you are there, check the Windows date and time and switch off any proxy: a clock that is a few hours out is enough on its own to break the handshake with Microsoft. 3. Reinstall the key from the command line
When the graphical route just keeps looping, the command line usually gets through:
- cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus — note the last five characters of the installed key;
- cscript ospp.vbs /unpkey:XXXXX (those five characters) to remove it;
- cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX to enter yours;
- cscript ospp.vbs /act to trigger the activation.
If the machine came out of a company fleet, run cscript ospp.vbs /remhst before you activate. That command wipes the KMS server address still sitting in the configuration, the one quietly hijacking every attempt you make.

4. Repair Office, then call in Microsoft’s own assistant
A damaged installation can stop activation dead. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft Office, click Modify and run a Quick Repair first. If the code comes back, do it again with Online Repair: much slower, but far more thorough. Check as well that the Windows Software Protection service (sppsvc) has not been disabled — that service is what carries activation, and a surprising number of “optimiser” tools turn it off. A quick sanity check on the Windows side: run slmgr /xpr from an administrator prompt. If Windows cannot report its own licence state either, your problem sits with the licensing service rather than with Office. 5. The unofficial activator case
Let’s be blunt about this one. If Office was “activated” by a tool downloaded from a forum, 0x4004F00C is telling you the trick has stopped working. Those programs fake a KMS server on your own machine, and they break the moment Microsoft changes anything on their side. No command will repair that, and the error is not even the real risk here — the malware bundled with those executables is. Uninstall the activator, reinstall Office from the official website, and start again from a legitimate key. In the European Union, reselling genuine second-hand licences is entirely legal (the UsedSoft ruling, CJEU C-128/11), so a perpetual Office licence costs less than a couple of months of subscription and never expires.
If nothing has worked
At that point you have to face the possibility that the key itself is dead. Three classic cases: a key blocked by Microsoft after a fraudulent resale, a key revoked along with a cancelled corporate agreement, or a key that has simply run past its activation quota, having been installed on too many machines. Neither /act, nor an online repair, nor a full reinstall will change anything: the refusal comes from the activation server, not from your PC. Office still runs — can I just ignore code 0x4004F00C?
No, it is a reprieve rather than a pardon. While the grace period lasts, Word, Excel and PowerPoint stay fully usable — roughly a month on a volume-licensed installation, with the REMAINING GRACE line counting down for you. Once it expires, your documents still open and still print, but editing and saving are blocked. Backing up your files before that deadline is half an hour well spent.
How is this different from an “Unlicensed Product” banner or error 25004?
0x4004F00C describes a state: Office is running, unactivated, still inside its grace window. The Unlicensed Product message is what you get once that window has closed and the suite has genuinely locked itself down. Error 25004 is a different animal again: the server recognises your key perfectly well but refuses it, because it has already been used on the maximum number of machines. Same family, three very different diagnoses.
I entered my key and the code came straight back — why?
Three things to check. Edition first: a Professional Plus key needs a Professional Plus installation, and you can see which one you have under File > Account.
