Almost every Windows or Office activation failure comes down to one of four causes: the key does not match the edition you installed, the machine cannot reach Microsoft’s activation servers, the key has already been used on more devices than it allows, or the key has been blocked outright. The eight activation error codes you will actually meet
Microsoft publishes dozens of activation codes, but the same short list comes back again and again. Find yours below before running anything — the fix for a network error and the fix for an edition mismatch have nothing in common.

Step zero: read your actual licence state
Never swap keys blind. Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal as administrator and run these three commands first — they take five seconds and usually make the diagnosis obvious.
- slmgr /dli — shows the last five characters of the installed key, the licence channel and the current status.
- slmgr /dlv — the detailed view: activation ID, licence type (RETAIL, OEM_DM or VOLUME_KMSCLIENT) and remaining rearm count.
- slmgr /xpr — one plain sentence: is this machine permanently activated, or running on a countdown?
If slmgr /dlv reports VOLUME_KMSCLIENT on a home PC, you have found your problem: that machine is waiting for a corporate KMS server it will never see again, which produces 0x8007007B and 0xC004F074 until you install a proper retail key.
Fixing Windows activation, command by command
Run every command from an elevated prompt, in this order. Steps 1 to 4 solve the majority of Windows cases.
- Correct the system clock and time zone (Settings > Time & language), then reboot. This alone clears most 0x80072F8F failures.
- Remove the current key: slmgr /upk followed by slmgr /cpky to wipe it from the registry.
- Install your key: slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX (dashes included).
- Activate online: slmgr /ato. Wait for the confirmation dialog rather than assuming it worked.
- If you saw a KMS code, run slmgr /ckms before repeating steps 2 to 4. This deletes the stored KMS host name.
- Restart the licensing service: net stop sppsvc then net start sppsvc, and retry slmgr /ato.
- Run the official troubleshooter: Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot. It needs a linked Microsoft account and is the supported route after a hardware change.

One warning: if an “activation script” or KMS emulator was ever run on this machine, expect 0xC004F017 and 0x8007007B to persist even after entering a clean key, because those tools rewrite licensing entries and set a fake KMS host. Fixing Office activation errors with ospp.vbs
Office has its own licensing engine and its own script, ospp.vbs. Open an elevated Command Prompt and change directory to the folder matching your installation.

Why did Windows deactivate itself after I changed hardware?
Activation is tied to a hardware fingerprint dominated by the motherboard. Replace it and the digital licence no longer matches, producing 0x803FA067 or a plain “not activated” notice. If the licence is retail and linked to a Microsoft account, Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot > “I changed hardware on this device recently” reassigns it. Can I use one key on two computers?
