Windows 10 End of Support: Your 4 Options in 2026 (ESU)
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Nothing was switched off: the PC still boots, the license still activates, the programs still run — but Microsoft stopped shipping security patches, so every flaw found since then stays open on an unprotected machine. In 2026 you have four realistic options: enroll in consumer ESU (which itself expires on October 13, 2026), upgrade to Windows 11, stay on Windows 10 and harden it, or move to a Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC release that is serviced into 2027. Here are the real dates, costs and trade-offs.
What end of support actually changed
End of support is a servicing decision, not a kill switch.
What you no longer receive:
- Monthly security updates for the operating system — kernel, drivers, networking, printing, SMB, graphics.
- Reliability fixes and new features. Windows 10 version 22H2 is frozen for good.
- Free technical support from Microsoft for Windows 10 problems.
What still works:
- Activation. Microsoft’s servers still accept Windows 10 product keys, so a clean install activates normally in 2026.
- Microsoft Defender security-intelligence (signature) updates, committed through at least October 2028.
- Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10, with security updates until October 10, 2028. Edge and WebView2 follow a similar horizon.
- Third-party software and drivers, until each vendor drops Windows 10 on its own schedule.
The risk is cumulative, not instant. Every patch Tuesday adds another publicly documented vulnerability that will never be fixed on your machine — and attackers read those bulletins too.

Option 1 — Consumer ESU: a bridge that ends this October
Extended Security Updates deliver critical and important security patches only — no feature updates, no bug fixes, no technical support. Consumer ESU covers October 15, 2025 to October 13, 2026, and one Microsoft account covers up to 10 devices.
How to enroll
- Confirm the PC runs Windows 10 version 22H2 with all final updates installed.
- Sign in with a Microsoft account holding administrator rights — local and child accounts cannot enroll.
- Open Settings, Update & Security, Windows Update, and use the Enroll now link in the ESU banner.
- Choose your route. In the European Economic Area, Microsoft dropped the Windows Backup condition after pressure from consumer groups, so EEA users enroll free — the account just has to sign in on that PC every 60 days. Elsewhere: Windows Backup sync, 1,000 Rewards points, or the fee.
The catch in 2026
ESU is a fixed window, not a 12-month subscription starting when you click: enrolling today buys the weeks left until October 13, 2026, not a year — use it to cover a migration you have already scheduled. Businesses get longer through volume licensing — commercial ESU runs to October 2028, but the price doubles annually (roughly 61 USD per device in year one, 122 in year two, 244 in year three).
Option 2 — Upgrade to Windows 11 (right for most people)
If the hardware qualifies, this option ends the problem instead of postponing it. The minimum requirements:
- A 64-bit CPU on Microsoft’s list — broadly Intel 8th gen, AMD Ryzen 2000 or Qualcomm 850 and newer, 2 cores at 1 GHz.
- TPM 2.0 plus UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable.
- 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage as a floor — realistically 8 GB and an SSD.
- DirectX 12 compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
Before writing a PC off, check the firmware. Many “incompatible” machines simply have the TPM switched off: enable PTT on Intel boards or fTPM on AMD, then convert the disk from Legacy/CSM to UEFI with the built-in mbr2gpt tool so Secure Boot can be turned on. Registry bypasses for unsupported CPUs exist, but be clear-eyed: Microsoft states such devices are not entitled to updates, and recent releases need CPU instructions (SSE4.2, POPCNT) that older processors lack. A stopgap, not a plan.

Do you actually need to buy a Windows 11 license?
Not always, and we would rather say so plainly. If the PC already carries a genuine, activated Windows 10 license and passes the hardware check, the in-place upgrade keeps your files, apps and activation — you pay nothing. You need a key in four cases: Windows is not activated; you are reinstalling on a different machine; the old license was OEM and died with its motherboard; or you want Home to Pro for BitLocker, Remote Desktop host, Hyper-V and domain join. Option 3 — Staying on Windows 10 without ESU
Legitimate for a machine driving one specific tool — an old scanner, a CNC controller, a studio rig. A poor idea for the family PC that does banking and email. If you stay, compensate:
- Stop browsing as an administrator. A standard user account neutralises a large share of privilege-escalation chains.
- Keep the browser current. Chrome, Edge and Firefox still update on Windows 10; the browser is now your real security boundary.
- Isolate the machine. No inbound RDP, no port forwarding, SMBv1 disabled, ideally a separate VLAN or guest network.
- Back up properly. Three copies, two media, one offline — the only reliable answer to ransomware on an unpatched OS.
- Shrink the surface. Remove Java, old PDF readers, abandoned plug-ins and anything you no longer launch.
- Keep Defender enabled with cloud protection on, and add DNS filtering at the router.
These measures reduce the risk. They do not remove it — nothing here equals a patched kernel.
Option 4 — Windows 10 Enterprise and the LTSC route
The Long-Term Servicing Channel is the only branch of Windows 10 still officially supported. Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 gets security updates until January 12, 2027, and the IoT Enterprise variant until January 13, 2032. LTSC ships without the Store, Cortana or annual feature updates — stability is the point, which suits kiosks, industrial equipment and test benches.
Two honest caveats: LTSC media moves through volume licensing agreements, so it is not a consumer path, and Microsoft advises against it on general-purpose office PCs, where thin app and driver support quickly bites. If what you want is Enterprise capability on standard Windows 10 — AppLocker, Credential Guard, granular BitLocker management — a Windows 10 Enterprise license is the direct route, and it upgrades in place from Pro.
Do not forget Office
Windows 10 and Office 2019 hit end of support on the same day, and Office 2021 follows this autumn. If you are rebuilding anyway, align both lifecycles now.

Is it illegal to keep using Windows 10 in 2026?
No. Your license is perpetual and does not expire with support, so you may run Windows 10 as long as the hardware lasts. The question is risk, not legality. On an internet-facing PC handling personal data, an unpatched OS is a real exposure — and if you process customer data professionally, it sits badly with the GDPR duty to apply appropriate technical measures.
Can I still activate a new Windows 10 key after end of support?
Yes. Activation and support are separate systems: Microsoft’s servers still accept Windows 10 keys, so a fresh install activates in minutes. My PC fails the Windows 11 check — is it finished?
Not necessarily. Check the firmware first: the TPM (PTT on Intel, fTPM on AMD) is often present but disabled, Secure Boot needs UEFI rather than Legacy/CSM boot, and some boards need a BIOS update first. That rescues many 2017-2019 machines. If the CPU truly is not on the supported list, the realistic path is ESU until October, then a hardened offline role for that PC or new hardware.
Should I upgrade in place or do a clean install?
In place if the system is healthy: it preserves files, apps and the digital license, and it is much faster. Clean install if the machine carries years of accumulated software, if you are switching from Home to Pro, or if you are moving to another PC. Keep your product key and the email it came in — a genuine retail-type license can be reused after a hardware change, whereas an OEM key stays bound to its original motherboard.
