Remove the “Activate Windows” Watermark: Activation Fix
The “Activate Windows – Go to Settings to activate Windows” watermark means exactly one thing: your copy of Windows runs perfectly well, but it is not activated. Most of the time, no valid key is attached to that installation — Windows was set up using the “I don’t have a product key” option, the key doesn’t match the edition on disk, or the digital license was broken by a hardware change. Hiding the watermark with a registry tweak does not activate anything. It buries the symptom and leaves the cause exactly where it was. So let’s start by checking what your license is actually doing, then work through the fixes, from the quickest to the most permanent.
What the “Activate Windows” watermark really means
That semi-transparent text appears a few minutes after every boot, parks itself in the bottom-right corner, and burns into every screenshot you take. An unactivated Windows keeps running: your files are intact, security updates still arrive, and nothing is deleted. What you lose is the Personalization section — wallpaper, accent colors, themes, lock screen — which stays grayed out. The causes are always pulled from the same short list:
- Windows installed without a key: the grace period has simply run out.
- A key from a different edition or a different version — a Home key on a Pro install, for example.
- New motherboard, new system drive, or a clean reinstall: the digital license tied to the old hardware is no longer recognized.
- An OEM key already in use on another machine, an expired volume key, or a key resold so many times that Microsoft has blocked it.
- A technical failure: no internet access, wrong date and time, a firewall, proxy or VPN blocking Microsoft’s servers, or the Software Protection service (sppsvc) stopped.
- A corrupted license store — the tokens.dat file — after an update or a crash.
- An evaluation build (Enterprise or LTSC Evaluation) or an expired Insider build: here the watermark is normal behavior and will only disappear by moving to a retail edition.
- A pirate activator installed by some previous “repair guy”, whose renewal cycle has finally failed.

The fixes, from the simplest to the most radical
1. Check what your license is really doing
Open Settings > System > Activation first, then a Command Prompt as administrator (Start menu, type “cmd”, right-click > Run as administrator):

If slmgr /xpr tells you the machine is permanently activated while the watermark is still sitting on screen, you’re looking at a display leftover, nothing more. Restart Windows Explorer (Ctrl + Shift + Esc > Windows Explorer > Restart), then reboot the PC. That clears it in the vast majority of cases.
2. Run the activation cleanly
Before retrying, fix whatever is making activation fail: date and time set automatically, a working internet connection, VPN and proxy switched off for the duration of the operation. An incorrect system clock alone is enough to break the certificate exchange with Microsoft’s servers. Then, in the administrator prompt:
- slmgr /ato — if the installed key is good, activation completes within a few seconds.
- If it fails, reinstall the key with slmgr /ipk YOUR-KEY, then run slmgr /ato again.
- Reboot. The watermark is gone at the next start-up.

3. Use the activation troubleshooter
In Settings > System > Activation, click Troubleshoot — it only appears on an administrator account. If your digital license was linked to your Microsoft account, choose “I changed hardware on this device recently”, sign in, pick your PC from the list, tick “This is the device I’m using right now”, then hit Activate. This is the only official route back after a component swap, and it costs nothing to try.

4. Repair the license store
If activation keeps failing with a key you know is valid, the license store may be corrupted. Run sfc /scannow first, then DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, and reboot. If nothing changes, rebuild the token file:
- net stop sppsvc (stops the Software Protection service).
- Rename C:\Windows\System32\spp\store\2.0\tokens.dat to tokens.old.
- net start sppsvc, then slmgr /ipk with your key, followed by slmgr /ato.
Let’s be clear about what this does: it only treats local corruption. It will never bring back a key that Microsoft’s servers have already refused. If the rejection comes from the server side, no amount of local surgery changes the answer.
5. What you should absolutely not do
Registry tricks and “watermark removers” hide a handful of pixels and nothing more. Windows stays unactivated, Personalization stays locked, and the watermark comes straight back after each cumulative update — usually at the worst possible moment. As for pirate KMS or HWID activators, they are illegal, unstable, flagged by Windows Defender, and frequently bundled with something you did not ask for.
Worth drawing a clear line here, because the two things get confused constantly: a pre-owned license is not a cracked one. Reselling a used software license within the European Union has been lawful since the Court of Justice’s UsedSoft ruling (case C-128/11). The key is genuine, it was issued by Microsoft, and it activates against Microsoft’s own servers exactly like a boxed copy. A cracked activator patches your system and eventually breaks; an authentic Windows 11 key simply works, and costs less than an hour of tinkering.
If nothing has worked
Let’s say it plainly: some keys are dead. An OEM key welded to a motherboard you have replaced, a revoked volume key, a gray-market key resold dozens of times and blacklisted — no slmgr command, no troubleshooter and no reinstall will bring any of them back. License status is decided on Microsoft’s servers, not on your PC, and no local fix overrules that verdict. Two ways out:
- Legitimate case (PC bought with Windows preinstalled, retail boxed license, hardware failure still under warranty): contact Microsoft support with your invoice and serial number. Phone activation through slui 4 is often enough on its own.
- Key lost or permanently blocked: start again with a fresh license you can activate immediately. Frequently asked questions
Is the “Activate Windows” watermark dangerous?
No. It is neither a virus nor a countdown to your PC being locked out: your files stay accessible and security updates keep coming. The only real consequences are the watermark burned into your screen and your screenshots, the periodic activation reminders, and the Personalization panel staying out of reach.
Can the watermark be removed without activating Windows?
Certain registry edits and third-party utilities do make the text vanish from the screen. But Windows remains unactivated underneath: personalization stays inaccessible, the watermark returns after major updates, and you sometimes collect unwanted software along the way. The only durable removal is a valid license.
I entered my key and the watermark is still there
Check the real status with slmgr /xpr. If Windows reports itself as activated, reboot — the display refreshes at the next start-up. If activation actually failed, write down the exact error code and deal with that specific code. One special case: on an Enterprise Evaluation, LTSC Evaluation or expired Insider build, no standard product key will remove the watermark. You have to move to a regular edition first.
Does the watermark slow the PC down or affect games?
Not measurably. There is no performance throttling tied to activation status; frame rates, boot times and disk speed are unchanged. The watermark is drawn as a simple overlay. The annoyance is visual, and in screen recordings or streams, cosmetic damage is the real cost.
Do I have to reinstall Windows to fix this?
Almost never. In the overwhelming majority of cases, a valid key entered through slui 3 or slmgr /ipk, followed by slmgr /ato, is enough — no reinstall, no data loss. A clean install is only genuinely required when you need to leave an evaluation or Insider build behind, or when the system itself is too damaged for sfc and DISM to repair.
