Error 0x4004F00D: Fix an Expired Office Activation

Error 0x4004F00D means Office is no longer activated: the grace period is over and the suite has switched to reduced functionality mode — your documents open read-only, and editing and saving are blocked. The most common cause is a license that was never validated with Microsoft’s servers, or an activation that stopped renewing itself (a volume license key cut off from its KMS server, a corrupted token, an expired subscription). Your files are not at risk: the lock is purely a software one. We are going to check the license status, reinstall the key cleanly and repair Office.

What does error 0x4004F00D mean?

Office never shuts down all at once: after installation, it grants a grace period during which everything works while it keeps asking to be activated. When that countdown reaches zero without a license validated online, the licensing service returns 0x4004F00D: Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint display a red “Product Deactivated” or “Unlicensed Product” banner, and you can still read and print, but no longer change anything.

The standard causes of this switch:

• Online activation never went through: firewall, proxy, VPN, offline installation or a system clock that is out of sync.
• A volume license (KMS) key cut off from the company’s activation server: the lease expires without being renewed.
• The key has reached its maximum number of activations, or does not match the installed edition.
• The Microsoft 365 subscription has expired, or the account signed in to Word is not the one that holds the license.
• The local license token is corrupted after an update, a hardware change or a system image restore.
• A fake activator (a pirate KMS preinstalled on a second-hand PC) has stopped responding.

The fixes, from the simplest to the most drastic

1. Read the real license status with ospp.vbs

Before changing anything, open Command Prompt as administrator, then run:

1. cd /d “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16” (if that folder does not exist, try C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16)
2. cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus

Note the LICENSE STATUS line and the last 5 characters of the key.

If ospp.vbs cannot be found, your Office is tied to an account: go through File > Account in Word.

2. Restore the basics: time, network, account

• Settings > Time & language: correct date, time and time zone. In an admin prompt: w32tm /resync.
• Temporarily turn off your VPN, proxy and third-party antivirus, or test through your phone’s hotspot: activation servers are often filtered.
• In Word: File > Account, check the account shown, then click Update License.
• Restart: the licensing service only reloads its state at startup.

3. Reinstall the key cleanly

This is the step that solves most cases. Still in an admin prompt, in the Office16 folder:

1. cscript ospp.vbs /unpkey:XXXXX — the 5 characters noted in step 1, to remove the dead key.
2. cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX — your 25-character key.
3. cscript ospp.vbs /act — the message you are looking for is “Product activation successful”.
4. cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus — the status should now read LICENSED.

4. Quick Repair, then Online Repair

If the correct key is refused, the license files are probably damaged. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365, click Modify, then:

1. Quick Repair: 2 to 3 minutes, offline. Open Word again and retry the activation.
2. If that does not work, Online Repair: 20 to 30 minutes, Office is downloaded again. Your documents and Outlook profile are kept.

5. Clear the license cache or reinstall

• Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA): a free official tool with a scenario dedicated to Office activation errors.
• Manually: close Office and empty the %localappdata%\Microsoft\Office\Licenses folder. The tokens are rebuilt the next time Office starts.
• As a last resort, a complete uninstall followed by a reinstall of the right edition.

Two honest clarifications. The cscript ospp.vbs /rearm command resets the grace counter: it pushes the message back by a few days, activates nothing and can only be used a limited number of times. And if the PC was “activated” by a pirate activator, 0x4004F00D is the normal symptom of that activator dying: no command will bring that setup back to life. The only clean way out is a genuine Office product key, legal in Europe thanks to the UsedSoft ruling (CJEU C-128/11).

If nothing has worked

Let’s be direct: a key that the activation server refuses, that has been revoked or that has used up its activation quota cannot be repaired. No command, no repair, no cleanup will revive a license that Microsoft’s servers reject. If activation still fails after the key has been reinstalled cleanly, the problem is no longer on your PC: it is in the activation database.

Will I lose my documents because of error 0x4004F00D?

No. Reduced functionality mode blocks editing and saving, but your files remain intact: you can open them, print them and copy their content. In the meantime, use the free web versions of Word and Excel.

What is the difference between 0x4004F00D and 0x4004F00C?

Both codes belong to the same “grace period” family. Error 0x4004F00C means Office is still in its grace period: everything works, but the countdown has started. 0x4004F00D comes next, once the grace period has run out. My key worked before I reinstalled Windows: why is Office locked now?

Reinstalling Windows or changing the motherboard alters the hardware fingerprint: Office believes it is on a new computer and uses up an extra activation. If the quota has been reached, activation fails and the grace period expires, hence 0x4004F00D. Reinstalling the key with ospp.vbs /inpkey then /act is often enough; otherwise, it is time to ask Microsoft to unlock it, or to get a new license.
