1. Retry activation after a real break

Open Command Prompt as administrator (Windows key, type cmd, right-click, “Run as administrator”), then run slmgr /ato to force a new request and slmgr /xpr to see the license status. If the server is down, running the command twenty times will change nothing: let an hour or two go by, restart, and try again. Windows also retries by itself, and the grace period gives you time.

2. Clear the path between your PC and Microsoft

This is the step that solves the most cases when waiting is not enough:

1. check the clock in Settings > Time & language > Date & time: turn on “Set time automatically”, then click “Sync now” (or type w32tm /resync);
2. disconnect any VPN and reset any proxy with netsh winhttp reset proxy;

3. Run the built-in activation troubleshooter

Go to Settings > System > Activation, then click “Troubleshoot”. This wizard, available from an administrator account, resynchronizes the digital license tied to your hardware and to your Microsoft account. It mainly fixes cases where activation had already worked on this PC.

4. Restart the licensing service and repair system files

Still in an administrator Command Prompt, in this order:

5. Reinstall the key, then activate by phone

If the server stays silent, re-enter the key and switch to phone activation, which does not depend on the online service:

1. slmgr /dlv: shows the license type (a “GVLK” key indicates a company PC under KMS: contact your IT department);
2. slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX: installs your product key;
3. slmgr /ato: attempts online activation;
4. slui 4: opens phone activation. Choose your country or region, call the toll-free number shown (or use Microsoft’s online activation page if the wizard points you there), give the installation ID and enter the confirmation ID you receive.
