Error 30015-4: Fix an Interrupted Office Installation
Error 30015-4 means the Office installation stopped partway through: the installer could not finish its work and rolled everything back. In the vast majority of cases, a third-party antivirus or a firewall blocked the process, sometimes by quarantining a file without displaying anything. The good news: this code says nothing about your product key, which only comes into play after the installation. Here is what to do, from the simplest step to a truly clean reinstall.
What does error 30015-4 mean?
Office installs through the Click-to-Run engine: your PC downloads and assembles the components as it goes. Codes 30015-4, 30015-11 and 30029-4 belong to the “interrupted installation” family, with the second number varying according to the stage reached. Microsoft does not publish a detailed code-by-code table, but the real causes are few:
- a third-party antivirus or security suite (Avast, AVG, Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, Bitdefender, ESET…) that blocks or quarantines the installer;
- a firewall, VPN, proxy or company network that cuts off access to Microsoft’s download servers;
- an unstable connection: Office is downloaded during the installation, and the slightest drop makes everything fail;
- leftovers from a previous version of Office, badly uninstalled or corrupted;
- the Microsoft Office Click-to-Run service stopped or disabled;
- an account without administrator rights, or less than 4 GB free on the system drive;
- damaged Windows system files, which prevent writing to Program Files.
Keep this in mind: 30015-4 is never a license problem. A faulty key would show an activation code starting with 0xC004…, not an installation code.
The fixes, from the simplest to the most drastic
1. Start again from a clean base
- Restart the PC: this releases the files locked by the failed attempt.
- Close all Office apps (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
- Check your disk space: you need at least 4 GB free on C:.
- Stabilize the connection: use Ethernet if you can, and turn off your VPN and proxy.
- Run the installer as administrator: right-click it, then “Run as administrator”.
2. Disable the third-party antivirus, the most common cause
A program that downloads hundreds of files and then writes to Program Files ticks every box of suspicious behavior: many security suites stop it silently.
- In your antivirus, turn off real-time protection for 30 minutes.
- Also turn off its firewall, which in most suites is separate from the Windows one.
- Open the quarantine: if OfficeSetup.exe or OfficeClickToRun.exe is in there, restore it and add it to the exclusions.
- Run the installation again, then turn protection back on as soon as Office is installed.
If disabling it is not enough, temporarily remove the suite with its publisher’s removal tool: some drivers stay active even when “disabled”. A word of honesty: if your installer comes from a torrent, a “pre-activated” ISO or a KMS activator, the antivirus is right to block it. Those packages are modified, often booby-trapped, never guaranteed. Start again from the official Microsoft download with a legitimate key.

3. Repair or completely remove the existing installation
A version of Office that is already present, even invisible or half uninstalled, conflicts with the new one.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365, then click Modify.
- Run a Quick Repair; if the error comes back, choose Online Repair, which downloads and reinstalls the whole suite.
- If Office does not appear in the list or refuses to uninstall, use the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA): it erases every trace, orphaned registry keys included.
- Restart, then reinstall.
4. Reset the Click-to-Run service and clear the cache
This service drives the whole installation; if it is stopped, nothing gets through.
- Windows + R, type services.msc, open Microsoft Office Click-to-Run Service, set its startup type to Automatic and start it.
- The quick version, in an administrator Command Prompt: net stop ClickToRunSvc then net start ClickToRunSvc.
- Clear the cache: Windows + R, %temp%, delete the contents, then delete the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\ClickToRun folder and any leftover Office folders.
- Check that Windows Update works: Click-to-Run relies on it.
5. Offline installation and clean boot
When the installation always stops at the same percentage, take the network out of the equation with the Office Deployment Tool, available free from Microsoft: you first download all the files, then install from the disk.
- download: setup.exe /download configuration.xml;
- installation: setup.exe /configure configuration.xml.
Combine this with a clean boot: msconfig, Services tab, tick “Hide all Microsoft services”, disable the rest and restart. If Windows itself is damaged, run sfc /scannow then DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth.
If nothing has worked
Let’s be frank: after a complete removal with SaRA, a neutralized antivirus and an offline installation, if 30015-4 persists, the problem is no longer Office but the system. A corrupted user profile, policies inherited from a company PC, damaged Windows components: test from a new local administrator account; if the error follows you there, only a Windows reset will settle the matter.
The other dead end comes later: Office finally installs, but the key is refused. A key that the activation server refuses, that has been revoked or whose number of activations has been exceeded cannot be repaired — no command will bring it back. You can try cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey:YOUR-KEY then cscript ospp.vbs /act from the Office installation folder, but if the server rejects it, the answer is final. Two options remain: Microsoft support, proof of purchase in hand if the license is yours, or a new license. Frequently asked questions
Does error 30015-4 mean my Office key is invalid?
No. This code appears while the files are being copied, so before any license check: your Office product key is only requested the first time you open Word or Excel. As long as the code starts with 30, look at the antivirus, the network or a previous installation that was not properly removed.
Do I need to uninstall my antivirus to install Office?
Rarely. Turning off real-time protection and the suite’s firewall is almost always enough; a complete uninstall is only justified if the block persists. Either way, turn protection back on as soon as Office is installed, and never download the installer from anywhere other than the official websites.
30015-4, 30015-11, 30029-4: is it the same failure?
They are variants of the same family: the installation stopped, only the stage differs. The method stays the same — antivirus, network, complete cleanup, offline installation. If your screen shows a neighboring code, see error 30015-11, error 30029-4 or error 30180-4.
