Error 0x8004FC12: Reactivate Office After an Update

Error 0x8004FC12 means Office failed to validate its license: the apps open, a banner asks for activation, then editing eventually locks up. It most often appears after a Windows or Office update that left the licensing service in an inconsistent state — the key itself is rarely to blame. So the problem is on the system side, not the product side, and it can be fixed without reinstalling. Here is what to do, from the simplest fix to the most drastic.

What does error 0x8004FC12 mean?

The 0x8004 prefix signals a failure reported by an internal Windows component: here, the building block that stores and checks licenses. Office did request activation, but the operation failed before it completed, or Microsoft’s response could not be written to the local license store. So this is not a “your key is invalid” message, more of an “I couldn’t do my job” — which is why a repair is very often enough.

The documented causes of this type of failure:

• a Windows or Office update changed components of the licensing system and left it in an inconsistent state;
• the Software Protection service (sppsvc) is stopped, disabled or blocked at startup;
• the Office sign-in tokens stored in Windows are out of date, or tied to an account that does not hold the license;
• a firewall, a proxy or an antivirus is filtering the activation servers;
• the PC’s date or time is wrong, which breaks the secure connection;
• an “activator” or a pirate KMS has hijacked the licensing system.

The fixes, from the simplest to the most drastic

1. The two-minute checks

• check the date and time in Settings > Time & language;
• temporarily turn off your VPN, proxy and the antivirus’s web filtering, then try again;
• in Word, open File > Account: the account shown must be the one that holds the license;
• fully restart the PC: after an update, some licensing operations only complete on restart.

2. Restart the Software Protection service

This service handles Office activation as well as Windows activation; when it is stopped, nothing goes through. In an administrator Command Prompt, type one after the other:

• net stop sppsvc
• sc config sppsvc start= auto
• net start sppsvc

Open Word again and retry the activation. If the service refuses to start, system files have been damaged: run sfc /scannow then DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, restart and try again.

3. Quick Repair, then Online Repair of Office

This is the fix that most often clears this code: it rebuilds the activation components without touching your documents.

1. open Settings > Apps > Installed apps;
2. find your installation (Office 2021, Office 2024 or Microsoft 365), click the three dots, then Modify;
3. choose Quick Repair, let the tool do its work, then test;
4. if the error persists, do it again with Online Repair: it takes longer and downloads the faulty files again.

4. Clear the credentials, then reinstall the key

First clear out the stale tokens: Control Panel > User Accounts > Credential Manager > Windows Credentials, then remove the entries starting with MicrosoftOffice16. Restart, then sign in again.

Next, remove the key and reinstall it with Microsoft’s official ospp.vbs tool. In an administrator prompt, go to the Office folder (cd “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16”, or Program Files (x86) for 32-bit Office):

5. Microsoft’s assistant, then a clean reinstall

Microsoft offers a free utility, the Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA): its “Office won’t activate” scenario checks services, licenses and credentials. If it fails, run its second scenario, the complete Office uninstall, which removes the leftovers that a simple “Uninstall” leaves behind. Reinstall, then enter your key.

If nothing has worked

Let’s be frank: there is one case where no command will change anything. If your key is still refused after a clean reinstall, the problem is no longer on your PC but on Microsoft’s servers. A key can be refused by the activation server, revoked or past its number of activations: an OEM key on a computer whose motherboard was replaced, a key resold in breach of its license terms, an invalidated batch, a key installed on too many computers. No command can revive a license that has been deactivated on the server side. The same goes for a pirate activator: every update will break the activation again.

Frequently asked questions

The error appeared after a Windows update: should I uninstall it?

That is neither necessary nor recommended. The update did not delete your license — it interrupted an activation mechanism, and restarting sppsvc then repairing Office is enough in most cases. Only remove the update as a last resort — going without security fixes costs more than a repair.

Will I lose my documents or my key during these steps?

Your Word, Excel and PowerPoint files are never touched: they are stored separately from the program, even during an Online Repair. However, write down your product key before running /unpkey or a complete uninstall: without it, you cannot reactivate.

How is it different from other Office activation codes?

0x8004FC12 points to the activation mechanism itself, which can usually be repaired. Other codes concern the key or permissions: error 0x4004F00D signals an expired license or one outside its validity period, error 0x80070005 a permissions refusal. The diagnosis changes; the logic stays the same.
