How Windows activation works: product key or digital license

Windows activation proves to Microsoft’s servers that your copy of the system is genuine and used in line with its license. Since Windows 10, two mechanisms exist side by side, and confusing them is the first cause of activation problems.

A product key is a 25-character code split into five blocks. You enter it during installation or later, under Settings > System > Activation. Windows sends it to Microsoft, which validates it within seconds.

A digital license is invisible. After a first successful activation, Microsoft links the right to use Windows to a hardware fingerprint of your PC. Reinstall Windows on the same machine and it reactivates on its own, with nothing to type. Convenient, until the day you replace the motherboard.

Find out what you already have

In PowerShell, the command (Get-CimInstance -ClassName SoftwareLicensingService).OA3xOriginalProductKey shows the key that the PC maker stored in the firmware, if the computer came with Windows preinstalled. How to activate Windows step by step

1. Connect the PC to the internet and check the date, time and time zone: a clock that is out of sync makes validation fail.
2. Open Settings > System > Activation, expand “Change product key” and type your 25 characters. The shortcut Windows + R, then slui 3, opens the same screen directly.
3. Wait a few seconds: the message “Windows is activated” confirms it, along with the type of license detected.
4. Link the license to a Microsoft account (Settings > Accounts > Your info) to make a future reactivation easier.

Which license to activate, and at what price?

Watch the edition: a Home key will not apply to a Pro installation, and the reverse is also true. Check the “Edition” line under Settings > System > About before ordering, or compare the editions on our Windows 11 key page.

Good to know: Windows 10 reached its end of support on 14 October 2025: without Microsoft’s extended security program (ESU), it no longer receives security updates. A Windows 10 key still makes sense for a PC that cannot run Windows 11, and it also activates Windows 11 of the same edition once the hardware allows the upgrade.

Activation error codes and how to fix them

• 0xC004C003: the activation server rejected the key. Check that it was typed correctly; if the error persists with a key bought from us, contact our support team.
• 0xC004C008: the key has reached its activation limit, usually because it is already in use on another PC.
• 0xC004F074: Windows could not reach an activation server. A wrong system clock, a company firewall or a filtering DNS is the usual cause.
• 0xC004F050: the key is not valid for this installation, often because it belongs to another edition (Home instead of Pro, or the reverse). Our article Windows key not working details the fixes.
• 0x803F7001: no valid license was found, typically after a clean install on a PC that was never activated.
• 0xC004F213: no product key was found on the device, generally after a major hardware change such as a new motherboard.

After a hardware change: reactivate or buy a new key?

Windows treats the motherboard as the identity card of the PC: replacing it invalidates the digital license. If your Microsoft account was linked, run the activation troubleshooter, choose “I changed hardware on this device recently” and select the device in the list. Without that link, it depends on the license: a license preinstalled by the PC maker belongs to that machine and does not follow you to a new one.
