Upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro Without Reinstalling in 2026
To upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro without reinstalling, open Start, Settings, System, Activation, select “Change product key” and enter a 25-character Windows 11 Pro product key. Microsoft officially supports this upgrade path by manually entering the key, with a single restart at the end (Microsoft Learn, page dated October 4, 2024). Allow about 5 minutes in all: your files, apps, drivers and accounts stay where they are, with no formatting, no USB drive and no backup to restore. At Euroshopkey, a Windows 11 Pro key costs 9,90€, well below Microsoft’s list price for the same license.

- Frequently asked questions
1. How long does it take to upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro?
About 5 minutes, restart included, on a PC with an SSD. Moving from Windows 11 Home to Pro is not an installation: it is an in-place edition change that Windows applies without touching what is on your drive.
- 30 seconds to open Settings, System, Activation.
- 30 seconds to paste the 25-character key and start the check.
- 1 to 3 minutes of upgrade preparation, with a progress bar.
- 1 to 2 minutes of restart: Microsoft says you will be prompted to install Windows Pro and then restart.
On a mechanical hard drive, allow 10 to 15 minutes. Create a restore point all the same.
2. Where exactly is the “Change product key” option?
In Start, Settings, System, Activation: that is the official path given on Microsoft’s support page about upgrading Windows Home to Windows Pro. Expand “Upgrade your edition of Windows”, then select Change next to “Change product key”.
Three shortcuts to get there faster:
- Win + R, then
ms-settings:activation, opens the activation page directly. changepk.exe /ProductKey <your-key>, in an administrator command prompt, is the command-line tool Microsoft documents for edition changes. Microsoft’s own table, however, lists manual key entry as the only supported method for Home to Pro, so keep it as a fallback.- Win + R, then
ms-windows-store://windowsupgrade/, opens the Microsoft Store upgrade page if you don’t have a key.
The slmgr.vbs /ipk command does the rounds on forums, but Microsoft documents it with the generic setup keys that companies use with their own activation servers. With a key bought for a single PC, stick to Settings.
Two conditions apply. Microsoft requires your Windows 11 Home to be already activated, so deal with any “Activate Windows” watermark first. And if the “Upgrade your edition of Windows” option doesn’t appear, you are either already on Pro or your edition doesn’t accept this path: both cases are covered below.
3. What happens during the edition switch?
Windows unlocks components that are already on your drive; it doesn’t download new ones. Home and Pro share the same system image: only the license that Windows detects decides which features are switched on. Microsoft lists this path as supported by manual key entry only, with a restart.
- Windows sends the key to Microsoft’s activation servers, which check that it matches the Pro edition and that it is not already in use.
- It records the new edition in the registry and prepares the dormant components: BitLocker, Remote Desktop, Hyper-V, Windows Sandbox and Group Policy.
- The restart applies the switch. It is an ordinary restart, not a reinstallation.
- Once you are back, Settings, System, Activation shows Windows 11 Pro as the edition and “Active” as the activation state.
4. What you keep and what actually changes
You keep everything: files, apps, drivers, accounts and settings. That is the fundamental difference from a clean install, which wipes the drive and makes you reinstall everything.
Left untouched: documents and photos; installed software and its settings, Microsoft Office included; Steam or Epic games; drivers and printers; Microsoft accounts and local accounts; Wi-Fi networks. Your Office license is separate from your Windows license, so there is nothing to re-enter.
What changes: the edition name, and the arrival of the Pro-only features: BitLocker encryption, Remote Desktop host, Hyper-V, Windows Sandbox, the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc), joining a domain or Microsoft Entra ID, and a higher RAM ceiling. Full details in our Windows 11 Home vs Pro comparison.
BitLocker doesn’t switch itself on: start the encryption from Settings, Privacy & security, then store the recovery key somewhere safe.
5. When the upgrade fails, and how to unblock it
Five situations block the edition change, and four of them can be fixed without reinstalling.
1. You are on an N or KN edition. N editions (Europe) and KN editions (South Korea) ship without the media-related features. Microsoft states that devices running N or KN editions can only be upgraded to the corresponding N or KN editions: you need a Windows 11 Pro N key. Type winver to check.
2. You are on an LTSC release. This channel targets single-purpose devices such as kiosks or point-of-sale terminals, and Microsoft points out that it is not intended for most PCs. There is no path from Home to LTSC, nor from LTSC to Pro: only a clean install will do.
3. Your Windows 11 Home isn’t activated yet. Microsoft specifies that the procedure only applies to devices running an activated copy. Sort out the activation, then try again.
4. The key is the wrong type. An Office key, a Home key, a key meant for company deployments or a key already tied to another machine is rejected, with error codes such as 0xC004F050, 0xC004C003 or 0x803FA067. Our guide Windows key not working: what to do explains each code.
5. Your PC is in S mode. S mode blocks apps from outside the Microsoft Store, and it blocks the edition change too. Switch out of it from the Store: it’s free and permanent.
6. How much does upgrading from Home to Pro cost in 2026?
9,90€ at Euroshopkey for a lifetime Windows 11 Pro key, well below Microsoft’s list price for the same license. Checked on September 13, 2026: Microsoft’s support page about this upgrade shows no price at all, as the amount only appears in the Microsoft Store app when you buy. For Microsoft’s own price in your country, see the Windows 11 Pro page of the Microsoft Store.
The technical result is identical: the same Windows 11 Pro edition, activated on Microsoft’s servers. Only the price differs.

7. Can you go back to Windows 11 Home or move the Pro key?
Going back is not possible by simply changing the key; moving the key depends on the type of license. Microsoft marks Pro to Home as not supported in its table of downgrade paths: returning to Home means a clean install with a Windows 11 Home key.
The same applies to Windows 11 Pro to Windows 10 Pro: not supported.
Whether the license can move depends on its type. Some licenses stay tied to the motherboard of the PC they were first activated on, while others can be released and reactivated on another machine. Our guides to the Windows license types and to transferring a Windows license to a new PC explain what to do.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to format or reinstall to upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro?
No. Microsoft officially supports moving from Home to Pro simply by entering a key in Settings, System, Activation. One restart is enough, with no formatting and no installation media. Only LTSC releases require a reinstall.
How much does it cost to upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro?
9,90€ at Euroshopkey for a lifetime Windows 11 Pro key, and multi-PC packs lower the price per machine. Microsoft sells the same license at its list price, and the price of the upgrade offered in the Microsoft Store app is shown at checkout.
Will I lose my files, my software or my Office license?
No, nothing is deleted. The edition change keeps your documents, apps, drivers, accounts and settings. Your Office license is separate from your Windows license: it stays activated after the switch.
Why is my Windows 11 Pro key rejected during the edition change?
Four causes cover almost every case: an N or KN edition that needs a matching Pro N key, a Windows 11 Home that isn’t activated yet, a PC in S mode, or a typo. Use copy and paste, check your connection, then contact our support team by email, 7 days a week with a reply within 2 hours on average: if a key we sold you turns out to be defective, we replace it.
Can I go back to Windows 11 Home after the switch?
Not by simply changing the key. Microsoft states that Pro to Home is not a supported downgrade path. Going back means a clean install with a Windows 11 Home key, after backing up your data.
