Windows 11 LTSC key: a frozen version for PCs that must never change

A Windows 11 LTSC key activates the Long-Term Servicing Channel edition of Windows 11. Unlike Windows 11 Home or Pro, which receive a feature update every year, a PC running Windows 11 LTSC keeps exactly the same build for its whole support period. It only receives the monthly security and reliability fixes: never a new interface, never an app pushed onto it.

That stability is the whole point of the edition. It targets PCs where an overnight interface change is a real risk: industrial controllers and machine tools, medical equipment, interactive and ordering kiosks, point-of-sale terminals, digital signage, lab test benches and supervision stations. In these environments, a software validation is expensive and cannot be repeated twice a year.

Enterprise LTSC or IoT Enterprise LTSC: which edition should you choose?

Windows 11 LTSC 2024 comes in two editions, both based on build 26100 (version 24H2). The system is the same; the support length and the intended use set them apart.

In practice, IoT Enterprise LTSC is the default choice for a dedicated device: ten years of fixes instead of five, for a machine that does one job. Enterprise LTSC keeps its place when the PC joins an infrastructure that has already standardized on this edition. What Windows 11 LTSC includes, and what it leaves out

The edition is deliberately stripped of consumer features. Missing from the default installation:

• the Microsoft Store and the preinstalled consumer apps (news, weather, games, Clipchamp);
• Copilot and the promotional content of the Start menu;
• Microsoft Teams and the new Outlook;
• annual feature updates: the build never moves.

The whole professional base is there: BitLocker, Microsoft Defender, Hyper-V, Remote Desktop host, AppLocker, Group Policy and domain join, plus Assigned Access (kiosk mode) and Shell Launcher to lock a PC to a single application. The result is a lighter disk and memory footprint, with far fewer components to monitor and patch each month.

Compatibility, installation and activation

Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 shares the kernel of Windows 11 version 24H2, so it needs a compatible 64-bit processor, a TPM 2.0 chip, Secure Boot, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. Moving from Windows 10 or 11 Home or Pro to LTSC is not a simple key change: Microsoft does not support that in-place switch. Start from LTSC installation media, back up your data, perform a clean installation, then enter your key in Settings > System > Activation. Deploying LTSC on several devices

For a fleet of identical machines, build a reference image once, validate your business application on it, then deploy it with your usual tools: Configuration Manager, Intune or a provisioning package. Activate each device with its own key, and approve the monthly cumulative updates through Windows Update policies or WSUS after a short test on a pilot machine. Because the build never changes, your validation stays valid for the whole support period.
