Μάθετε περισσότεραA Windows Server key turns an ordinary machine into the heart of your office network. Windows Server is the operating system Microsoft designed for servers: the computer that centralizes a company’s files, user accounts and business applications. In our shop, a genuine Windows Server 2022 license costs 32,90 € as a perpetual license: you pay once and it stays valid for as long as you use the server, with no subscription.
The key arrives by email within minutes of payment, and activation runs on Microsoft’s official servers. For a small business or a freelancer setting up a first server, it is a direct way to get a genuine Windows Server 2022 license while keeping the budget for the hardware.
A workstation serves one person; a server serves the whole team. In practice, Windows Server lets you:
Microsoft offers Windows Server 2022 in three editions. The right question is not the size of your company but the number of virtual machines you plan to run.
| Edition | Designed for | Virtualization | CALs required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Small and mid-sized businesses: one physical server or light virtualization | 2 virtual machines included | Yes |
| Datacenter | Heavily virtualized environments, hosting providers | Unlimited virtual machines | Yes |
| Essentials | Very small teams: 25 users and 50 devices at most | One instance (physical or virtual) | No |
In practice, the Standard edition covers what nearly every small business needs: a file server, an Active Directory domain and up to two virtual machines to keep roles apart. Datacenter only pays off once you run a large number of virtual machines. For core-based licensing and the details of each edition, read our Windows Server 2022 license guide.
This is where many buyers get stuck. The server license covers the server’s operating system; CALs (Client Access Licenses) cover the right to connect to it. There are two types:
A concrete example: a design office of eight people, each with a desktop PC and a laptop, takes 8 User CALs. A shop where 12 sales assistants take turns on 4 tills takes 4 Device CALs.
One more detail: working on the server remotely as on a full desktop (Remote Desktop Services) requires specific RDS CALs on top of the standard CALs, as explained on our Windows Server RDS page. The two remote administration connections are included by default. CALs are separate from the server key and are not included with it.
The PCs that connect to the server stay on regular Windows: plan one Windows 11 Pro license per machine, at 9,90 € each.
Windows Server 2022 is a one-time purchase: the license is perpetual. At 32,90 €, you pay once, with no subscription or yearly renewal, a real advantage when you keep a close eye on fixed costs.
Take a ten-person company setting up its first file server with an Active Directory domain. On the software side, the shopping list is short: one Windows Server 2022 license for the central machine, then one Windows 11 Pro key per PC. The Pro edition is required to join a domain, which the Home edition cannot do. PCs that also serve as complete office workstations can take a Windows and Office bundle, which covers the system and the office suite in a single purchase.
Then plan the CALs according to how your team works (ten User CALs in this scenario, since each employee uses several devices) and the hardware. The operating systems are settled once and for all: none of these licenses triggers a subscription or recurring billing.
You do not need an expensive server to get started. Microsoft’s official minimum configuration is modest:
In practice, for a small file server with Active Directory, aim for 4 to 8 GB of RAM and an SSD: the difference in comfort is huge. A recent tower PC can serve as a first server, or as a test bench in a virtual machine before going live.
Special case: if what you need is a single, very powerful machine (CAD, computation, video editing) rather than a team server, look at Windows Pro for Workstations: Windows 11 Pro for Workstations, at 17,99 €, is designed for that kind of high-end hardware.
From order to activated server, the process is short:
When setup starts, Windows Server 2022 offers two modes. Desktop Experience adds a graphical interface close to Windows 11: Server Manager, configuration wizards for each role and familiar screens. It is the recommended choice for a first server. Server Core, lighter, is managed from the command line or remotely with PowerShell and Windows Admin Center: fewer installed components, so fewer restarts and a smaller attack surface, but it suits experienced administrators.
In both cases, you can enter the product key during installation or afterwards in the system settings; during setup, choose the edition that matches your key. If in doubt, apply the simple rule: first server, Desktop Experience.
Questions during installation? Our Windows activation guide details each step, from entering the key to checking activation, and our support team answers by email 7 days a week, within 2 hours on average.
Όλα όσα πρέπει να γνωρίζετε πριν παραγγείλετε
Yes. Windows Server 2022 is a one-time purchase version: the license is perpetual. You pay 32,90 € once, with no subscription, and the system stays activated for as long as you use the server. Microsoft publishes security updates for Windows Server 2022 until 14 October 2031.
These are pre-owned licenses. Reselling software licenses has been legal in the European Union since the UsedSoft ruling of the Court of Justice of the EU (case C-128/11, 2012). The key activates on Microsoft's official servers, exactly like a new license, and you receive an invoice with VAT.
With the Standard and Datacenter editions, yes: every user or device that connects to the server needs a CAL (Client Access License). Only the Essentials edition, limited to 25 users and 50 devices, does not require them. CALs are separate from the server key and are not included with it, and remote desktop sessions also need RDS CALs.
Yes. Windows Server 2022 installs on a physical machine as well as in a Hyper-V, VMware or Proxmox virtual machine. The Standard edition covers up to two virtual machines on a fully licensed host; beyond that, Microsoft's rules call for additional licenses or the Datacenter edition.
By email, within minutes of payment. The message contains the product key and the instructions to download Microsoft's official installation image. Payment is secure: card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Bancontact. Your purchase also comes with lifetime replacement of a defective key.
No. For two or three PCs, a simple network share on Windows 11 Pro can be enough. Windows Server becomes worthwhile when you need to centralize accounts, access rights, backups and a business application: usually from five PCs upward, or as soon as business software requires it.
